继《Smart Reading:跟美国学生同步练阅读》之后,Holybird 又策划出版了《Smart Science:跟美国学生同步学科学》这套全英文版图书。本书主要针对准备出国留学的学生,让他们在出国前做好更充分的准备。其他欲提高英语水平的读者,也可以用来坚持阅读,不断积累词汇,训练阅读能力。
全套书共8册,参照美国目前的"共同核心标准"(Common Core State Standards)以及各年级教学资源而编写,大致对应西方高中以前的各个年级(Grade 1-8)。每册内容包括50篇课文,由加拿大具有15年ESL教学经验的老师精选科学短文,加上配套词汇与阅读理解训练,可供学生在一年内使用。全书图文结合,彩色印制,帮助读者更好地学习和理解科学知识,同时强化英语,本书提供配套外教朗读,在学习科学知识的同时亦能提升英语阅读水平,购买方式详见图书封底博客链接。愿这套英文版的科学读本得到读者的支持和喜爱,期待您的反馈!

近些年,Holybird Publishing 陆续出版了一系列西方学校曾经使用的经典课本,如《美国语文》、《英语语文》等,归并于"西方原版教材与经典读物"系列。这类教材,原使用年代大致相当于民国时期,选文内容注重学生心智的培养,不太说教训导,而是潜脑润心、格物致知。这些书出版后颇受家长和老师的好评,有些学校还指定作为英语教学的补充读物。我们之所以推荐这些教材作为中国孩子的英语学习读物,一是试图改变一下国内许多孩子完全以传统英语教材学习英语的方式,二是这类原版教材,原本就是很好的教育读本与英语文学阅读范本,学生们阅读后对西方社会的文化与历史背景将有更多理解和认识。
这些书上市后,我们也不断收到一些家长的咨询,他们准备让孩子出国留学,问我们能否出版一些西方学校的现代教材。其实这也是我们出版《美国语文》这一系列后一直在思考的问题。2014 年,Holybird Publishing 在加拿大温哥华岛上美丽之城维多利亚注册并开展出版业务,我的小女儿也正好从北京的人大附中初中毕业,转入加拿大公立学校9 年级入读高中。伴读孩子学习的过程中,我更多地了解北美学校教育与教材体系。后来发现,完全照搬西方教材给国内中小学生使用,并不一定十分可取。一是西方学校教材针对英语为母语的孩子,并建立在课堂教学基础之上,很多学习安排需要互动与教学指导;二是即便在西方学校,很多老师也并非完全按课本进行教学,自主性较大,其教学模式、考试测评等与中国学校差别不小。为了满足这类家长与学生的需求,我不断查阅美国、加拿大与英国的学校教育资源并进行比较,*后决定,以美国现行的教学标准--"共同核心标准"(Common Core State Standards)为指导,聘请加拿大老师为中国学生针对性地编写一系列读物。
对于"共同核心标准",有些读者或许不太完全了解。简单而言,它类似于中国的全国统一教学大纲。在美国,学校教育系统是由各个州政府所监管与指导。这意味着,阿肯色州与俄勒冈州的孩子们,即便读同一年级,他们在学校所学的内容与教学要求可能不大相同。这些孩子们完成高中阶段(12 年级)的教育之后,将接受高等教育或步入职业生涯,由于他们接受的是不一样的教学标准的教育,由此便会产生一系列问题。尤其是当某个家庭从一个州搬迁至另一个州时,孩子们的续读或许会出现麻烦。"共同核心标准"正是着力解决这一问题。美国一些著名教育家与商界政界名人,极力倡导并制定这一共同核心教学标准,以尽量弥合各州之间的教育差异。比尔·盖茨基金会也大力支持该标准的制定与实施。目前为此,美国42 个州、哥伦比亚地区、4 个领地都志愿接受和实施这一教学标准。
共同核心标准,涵盖了幼儿园至12 年级(K12)的教学核心,旨在培养学生批判性思考力、传授各年级学科知识。让他们学会设立问题、自我思考,将所学内容进行关联和牵引。共同核心标准,首先注重的是教学生如何思考,然后是学习内容。注重记忆基础之上的知识与技能训练和相互关联。这一标准具有以下特点:
1. 建立在大量研究与事实基础之上而制定;
2. 标准清晰、易于理解并保持教育的延续性;
3. 与未来的大学教育与职业发展紧密结合;
4. 丰富的内容与知识应用,高度训练学生的思考能力;
5. 融合了各州教学标准的优势;
6. 参考了其他国家的教育优点,让学生未来更好地适应全球化经济与社会。
美国"共同核心大纲"主要包括两类课程:一是英语语言艺术(English Language Arts,简称"ELA"),另一个是数学。ELA 包括阅读、写作、听说等各个环节,这些语言技能,也是学习其他科目的关键,如科学、社会研究与信息技术等,所以它不是一门简单的英语教学科目。数学大纲,不是重点强调记忆,而是让学生在训练技能的同时,获取解决数学问题的答案。注重让学生运用数学知识和技能去解决真实世界中的问题。因此数学对学生来讲,会变得更加有趣而充满真实感。
为了帮助国内这些未来留学生提前做些语言能力与知识结构的储备,我们大量参阅了西方学校的教材与教学辅导书,了解其教学内容与难度要求,然后聘请加拿大经验丰富的教师,完全按照美国"共同核心标准"的基本要求,编写了这套系列用书,包括英语阅读(《Smart Reading》)、数学(《Smart Math》)、科学(《Smart Science》) 三门学科,每套书包括1-8 册,对应西方的1- 8 年级(北美高中为9-12 年级,共4 年)。让学生们将学科知识与英语语言训练同时结合,这样将来他们置身西方课堂,便能更快更好地融入教学之中、游刃有余地学习了!
